Colin Barrett+Review

In every writer’s life another writer writes something so amazing that it inspires them to be better. The first time this happened to me I was 15  ad I was introduced to Frank McCourt and his work. I knew that I wanted to be as good as him and that’s also where my love of Ireland came from. The second time this happened was the beginning of this summer when I was searching for new authors to read I came across Colin Barrett, who coincidentally happens to be Irish. I’ll be honest and say that I was stuck in a bad place with my writing. I needed inspiration, and Colin Barrett did that for me.

Me and Colin aren’t that far in age. I’m 23 and he’s in his early 30’s. This is important because it reminds me that success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time. Colin won the Frank O’Connor short story award, which is kind of a big deal. Colin is good, there’s no sugar coating it. He’s an amazing writer. His use of imaginary and realistic dialogue adds to his talent.

Young Skins is a collection of short stories that takes place in Ireland. The small towns of Ireland, the real people of Ireland. The young people of Ireland. I’ll probably get some angry emails for saying this but Colin’s writing style reminds me a lot of Frank McCourt. He’s honestly just as good as he was.

My favorite story in the book is every single one Calm With Horses. There’s action, love, and great character development.

I was waiting to tell you all this, but this summer I’ve been working on my own collection of short stories. I’m 5 stories in and I’m very excited for this new project. As some of you know my first novel was rejected a lot, which gave me a lot of motivation to do better. I think doing a collection of short stories will do more good than harm for me.

After countless cups of Lyon’s tea and getting through the first 3 hectic weeks in college, I finally got through Colin’s book. I love it, it has really inspired me as a writer. i want to put a demographic label on it for a recommendation but I feel like that would keep away potential fans. So if you like new writers, read this! It has made a difference in my writing career. Also, Colin responded to one of my tweets and he’s really nice. Between Kid Cudi retweeting me and Colin tweeting me, I don’t know if I can take anymore excitement.
